PROPECIA
It is thought that
individuals with androgenetic alopecia have increased level of DHT
in the scalp. DHT contributes to a shortening growth phase or
thinning of the hair. Propecia lowers the levels of DHT in the scalp
and serum by blocking 5-alpha-reductase, an enzyme involved in
regulating the hair follicle. This contributes to a normalisation of
the hair growth cycle. Propecia has been studied in more that 1800
men and in general Propecia maintained or showed and increase in the
number of scalp hairs. Those people who can expect to benefit from
the use of Propecia are men with mild to moderate hair
loss.

PROSCAR
The retail Rx price for Propecia is
approximately equal to the retail Rx price for Proscar. Both tablets
are made by Merck and contain only Finasteride: a Proscar tablet has
5mg, a Propecia tablet has 1mg. Cost-conscious consumers therefore
purchase Proscar and divide the 5mg tablet, thereby enjoying the
benefits of Propecia for about 1/4 the price of Propecia.

SKINOREN (Azelaic acid)
like Retin-A is more commonly used in the treatment of acne and
other skin conditions and is not indicated for the treatment of alopecia.
However recently the potential effect of using azelaic acid in the treatment of
androgenetic alopecia has been recognised and azelaic acid is a popular product
for the treatment of pattern hairloss. Many specialists recommend a combination
of one or more treatment. Natural-Hair recommends using minoxidil in
conjunction with a DHT reducing product such as Nizoral Shampoo or Saw Palmetto
Extract.
